Business Liability Insurance FAQs

Business liability insurance FAQs are some of the most frequently asked questions that business owners and operators have about this critical insurance policy type. Whether you are a sole proprietor, run a huge corporation, or anything in between, you need to understand the basics of this type of coverage and its significance to your business, so consult these FAQs or even some business liability insurance guides to get the answers you need.

How much business liability insurance will my business need?

Because of the general increase in negligence suits that have entered the court system in recent years, insurance industry experts are recommending that businesses make sure they are covered. There is no way to predict ahead of time how much coverage you might need in the event of an actual claim; but as with any insurance product, the higher the limits of coverage, the better off you will be when these events come to pass. Much of this will depend on the minimum limits your clients require to even do business with your company, which in most cases will be at least $1 million in both general liability and professional liability coverage.

What does general liability insurance protect against?

Claims of bodily injury or property damage that occurs either on your business property or on the premises of your customer are covered under general liability coverage. There are certain exceptions to this rule, such as damage you or your employees cause to a client's computer system. These policies are sometimes also referred to as comprehensive commercial liability plans, and it is worthwhile to note that they do not include errors and omissions claims that are related to the delivery of services.

Why is professional liability insurance important?

Professional liability insurance is also known as errors and omissions insurance. It protects the insured against financial losses stemming from errors and omissions claims related to the performance of services that your company is contracted to deliver. Claims that could fall into this category include a wide range of examples from loss of client data to fraud. Errors and omissions claims are thought of as low frequency, high severity in their nature because they don't occur often, but are usually very expensive when they do. Therefore being protected is very important.

Who is covered under these policies?

Any activities you do and those conducted by your W2 employees are covered under your general liability policies. This coverage also covers you for the work done by 1099 contractors on your behalf, but the contractors themselves are not always protected by this policy and they ought to maintain their own coverage.

What is meant my "claims made" liability coverage?

This is coverage offered on a claims made basis. In other words, only for work that is done during the covered policy period and claims that are made against you and that work will be included on a policy of this sort.

Is business liability insurance coverage good all around the world?

Most policies provide coverage in the United States and its territories. However, some carriers do offer worldwide coverage if your business does significant work overseas. This is something worth examining when you frame your liability policy.

What is an umbrella business policy and how does it relate to my business liability coverage?

This is one of the most common business liability insurance FAQs.  An umbrella policy is one that provides additional financial protection for the business when the limits on an underlying plan are met. For example, if the limits on your general liability policy are $1 million and there is a judgment against you for $2 million, the umbrella policy would pick up the rest, less deductible. These plans add coverage to general liability, hired and non owned auto, and employer's liability coverage but do not generally apply to professional liability plan.
